Giving back to its local community, HARIBO has utilised the funds generated by its carrier bag charges from its Pontefract based store and hope that the new feature will help to make Pontefract Castle an even better place for visitors both old and new.

The planting will be facilitated by The Conservation Volunteers who are working in partnership with Wakefield Council and volunteers from HARIBO’s Pontefract and Castleford based facilities.

Annette Barber, Head of HR at HARIBO, comments:

“We’re delighted to be able to give something back to the local community who have long supported our business and felt that this garden would be a lovely area for all to enjoy. It’s a great initiative and we are looking forward to seeing this new environment come to life!”

With the castle currently undergoing a major conservation project designed to preserve the building’s fascinating history for future generations, the herb garden will provide a welcoming space where people can relax, explore and appreciate a variety of herbs and plants including Rosemary, Sage, Oregano and Liquorice.

John Preston of The Conservation Volunteers, comments:

“It’s been a pleasure working alongside Wakefield Council and those from the castle itself to put together a vision for the herb garden and we cannot wait to get started. The transformation is sure to raise more than a few smiles from local people who have long been captivated by one of Pontefract’s most cherished historical visitor attractions.”

Cllr Peter Box CBE, Leader of Wakefield Council, said:

“Thanks to The Conservation Volunteers, Friends of Pontefract Castle and to HARIBO for their support in creating the new herb garden. It is a very welcome addition to the Castle and will be enjoyed by visitors for years to come.”

Those familiar with the attraction will be aware of the fortress’ ties to the cultivation of liquorice – a topic which the HARIBO team are sure to want to explore!

With planting taking place on three dates throughout April, the grand unveiling is to be revealed in due course. <s></s>
